Columbia, SC — If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. This quote by former Harvard University president Derek Bok has become so ubiquitous in education that it’s almost trite. It appears on everything from bumper stickers to dedications in college textbooks. Yet, the connection between education and money is never more important than in election years. Stumping for reelection this year, South Carolina’s lawmakers scarcely could ignore public education. Forty percent of the state’s budget goes to public schools, and cliches such as “children are our future” make for good campaign pandering. Never mentioned is how to permanently fund it....
